I don’t like hype. In many cases its just a lot of hot air over something that’s just mediocre at best or Dreamgirls at worst. If a film is lauded as being a must see, I generally don’t see, at least til the furore has died down and I’m good and ready. Avatar is one of those movies I had no intention of watching- ever, especially as I don’t do sci- fi. Humans with superhuman powers- yes, creatures that look like humans but with ridges in their heads and pointed ears- nope. Blue people are definitely out but this was unavoidable.
My friend’s son has been going on about how fantastic this film is for weeks and has been waiting with bated breath for the DVD release. As soon it became available he had his copy before sunset and told me I HAD to watch it. On my last visit to their house I tried to coax him into lending it so at least then I could watch it on fast forward and press play at any bits that looked interesting, thus watching it in a very technical sense, but at 16 he’s more than wise to that and insisted I see it there and then. I sighed, took a seat and you know what… it wasn’t too bad. I would even go as far as to say I mildly enjoyed it although I couldn’t stop comparing it to Last of the Mohicans and Dances With Wolves. Visually it was spectacular but the story was disappointingly predictable as I had hoped for something a little grippier to justify all the hype so that was a bit of a let down. Watchable though but not something I would really want to see again. What did you think?

I hear ya! I was really disappointed in the plot of Avatar. I would probably buy it though, just because of the effects. I’m usually not a big effects person, but they were truly phenomenal.

This is a copy-paste of my little review after I saw it:
I finally watched Avatar in 3D. Ala wrote the best about it. To paraphrase, the story has all the subtlety of an anvil marked “colonialism” dropped on your head. It is, of course, so many kinds of visual incredible. I was just disappointed whenever anyone spoke. Well, except maybe the Jane Goodall character, Grace. I liked her. I was also disappointed at the very Western look at business as usual. In short, only the lone white guy (who only cares because he thought with his penis and mistook lust for love) is capable of inciting the natives to rebel against the totally inhuman white businessmen. Not enough integrity, not enough sovereignty. The final scene –SPOILER SPOILER– wherein the humans are leaving, being marched out by the Na’vi and the avatars –SPOILER ALERT OVER– feels like a sort of pity fuck. I realize that many people may not have any idea, that perhaps subtlety would have been too much, but I doubt this film will cause anyone to stop buying blood diamonds, to not buy nikes, etc. For Western, and specifically American audiences, I felt that the tie between “big corporation/government” and voting with your dollar (what YOU do) was nonexistant. It can still just be something that happens out there, to other people, by other people. Individual responsibility was desperately lacking. Finally, unobtainium? Godawful stupid name.
Wow, thats one helluva review! It is a film that makes you think though. At the end of it my friend’s son said to me, “It makes humans look bad doesn’t it?”. My reply- “We ARE bad, we’ve been doing things like that for generations.” Unobtanium- yes- cringingly stupid name.
true, it was pretty much pocahontas with cool effects. those effects did make it a rather enjoyable watch for me, mind. i’m a sci-fi geek so i was more than happy to suspend my disbelief and enjoy the pretty 🙂
Eh. It was okay — definitely not worthy of all the “best picture of the year!” talk. It was really all about the special effects. If I hadn’t seen it in the theater (in 3D), it would have gotten an even lower rating in my book.
Never watched a film in 3D- missed out on this and Alice in Wonderland. Will be seeing whatever 3D picture is out next just so I can have the experience.
On the first 2 weeks of the movie i don’t have intention of watching this movie either, but after I heard a few good reviews of the movie, I decided to watch it and experience 3D at the same time. The story is good, but the effects are great!
hey there, I have to say that you are right, Avatar is pretty Pocahontes/Dances With Wolves, but that being said, who the hell cares? It was a good flick, and it was nice to see something optimistic for a change. The effects are wicked, and the love story was super cute.
Why can’t we just put aside the cyincisim for a little bit and just enjoy something that, I, at least, think is worth enjoying?
I hated that movie.
It was really mediocre. I hate hype like you as well. When hype happens, I get expectations and I was severely let down.
I agree with you about the plot, but loved the animation of the characters! No, I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it again, but if there was a sequel I would watch it at least once.

Mah, perhaps with an enormous and mega-hyper-ultra-tech 3d TV (say, 52 or 60”) Avatar might be… “watchable”. X-P
Otherwise.. story too predictable (white guy who meets the wild hot chick and falls in love with wild people and fights against his own), characters as deep as fried eggs, the bad guy who is *too* bad guy, the good guy who’s also too good (never heard about something in between, Jimmy boy?)… But all cartoon scenes were good, though.
It is not right to compare some movie with the classics such as Last of the Mohicans and Dances With Wolves. Perhaps if you give it sometime and watch it again once the hype has died or subsided, then you will be able to see what all the fuss was about.
