Dorothy Perkins Spring Summer 2010 Preview
Posted: November 26, 2009 Filed under: Clothing | Tags: Dorothy Perkins, spring summer 2010 16 Comments »While at the preview event last week I also got to view the spring summer collections for Dorothy Perkins which again had me oo-ing and aahing as I seem to do a lot. I was fairly surprised by the DP ranges, especially the accessories collection because they were a little more directional than I expected and didn’t look obviously Dotty P’s at all. I was especially impressed with the range of vintage style sunglasses and fought hard to resist the temptation to try them on- I mean, it’s not like I was out shopping on a Saturday afternoon.

Colours combinations were softly 80′s with gentle shades of peach and subtle pink paired with light greys and nude tones. I thought I’d taken more pics of the accessories than I actually did but I must have gotten caught up in the collections, zoned out and spent a few minutes just touching all the strappy summer heels, stroking suede and talking to myself while momentarily forgetting that I was supposed to be documenting it all, not just absorbing the ranges for my own mental archives.
As with the collection from Evans there were lots of neutral shades amped up with textural interest. Lace, broderie anglaise, pleating and tone on tone detailing provided surface intrigue to basic shapes. The general mood was light, airy and feminine with barely there colours highlighted with sequins or beaded embellishments.

I’ve intentionally focussed more on close up shots rather than full length mannequin pics because there was a lot of detailing that you may have missed if I’d just taken full length photos. A rock inspired aesthetic was still evident with a scattering of studs and eyelets but the effect was softer than we’ve seen previously with the hardwear often juxtaposed against delicate georgette fabrics and nautical looks.

There was also a sprinkling of gingham a la Christopher Kane, and very pale denim look washes on all types of fabrics and yarns, not just denim.

Polkadots!! I think I’ve told you before that I go ga- ga over spots so you won’t be surprised to hear that this jacket made me smile…..

…… but I didn’t smile as much as I did when I saw these..

Polkadot denim- what a joy! I am guessing (hoping) that there will probably be a pair of polkadot jeans in the range though I didn’t see any there, but I know they don’t bring every single last item to the shows.
Another jacket of note was this one…

Which without the magpie curated corsage would look like a fusty old thing Hyacinth Bucket would wear, but the addition of the corsage brings it bang up to date.

Another collection I’m looking forward to seeing in store.
Evans Spring Summer 2010 Preview
Posted: November 21, 2009 Filed under: Clothing | Tags: Evans, spring summer 2010 31 Comments »On Wednesday I had the huge privilege of attending the preview of the spring/ summer 2010 collections from all of the Arcadia brands. I had a grand ole time and was there for hours poring over all the clothes, touching everything, taking as many photos as my lil camera could stand and trying my best not to look like a total rookie who was out from behind her computer and covering a real event for the first time- though I probably did. It was a fantastic event which I thoroughly enjoyed and I got to meet other bloggers, namely the gorgeous Miggy from Miggy Likes the Internet who spotted me first and came over to say hello.
My first stop around the stands was of course Evans and all I can say is- WOW- we are in for a fantastic season. Looking though the rails of clothes the one phrase that kept going through my mind was, “I can’t believe this is Evans.” They have all the major trends- the nude colours, the fringing, nautical looks, the made to be seen underwear, lace, pale washed denim, sparkle, military- the lot. There was a good balance between the items that were trend heavy like a brown/ black satin biker style jacket covered in dark hammered sequins for the more trend literate customers, and items with a broader appeal such as a cotton blouse with lurex threads woven through the fabric, and a pale blue denim dress with tiny ruffles at the hem and cuffs. There was a focus on jackets in varying styles which I liked as you can easily update your existing wardrobe with just the addition of a different jacket if you don’t want to heavily buy into a particular look.
The collection was fluid and although there were separate themes and trends within the ranges they all gelled together seamlessly. Some of my favourite items were hanging on a rail and I don’t have photos of them yet as I could only photograph the mannequins, but fingers crossed- I will have at some stage.
The general trends were… (sorry about some of the hazy pictures)
…..Nude/ neutral pallettes and texture….

…… fringe details …..

……… and mixing florals with tougher looks.

There were lots of nude and neutral tones with added textural interests such as large ruffles, fringe, a beautiful ostrich feather fronted waistcoat and a good dose of sparkle. Sequins were still evident but not as dark or dramatically in your face as for Christmas ’09. For summer sequins are matt and overprinted with floral designs as in the case of one long A- line vest top, and hammered and distressed as in the jacket mentioned earlier. Tunics and knits had subtle sparkle with lurex threads and yarn that ran throughout the fabric and there was lots of sparkly jewellery to hand.
Nautical……
You know I love a bit of red white and blue in the springtime and there were a couple of nautical knits to get me looking forward to spring. A horizontal stripe cardi with very subtle sequin detailing was a gentle update to a classic look along with a stripe jersey dress/ tunic which was given a modern update by being combined with a photo real floral print.

For those of you who like a tougher edge to your wardrobe there were lots of studs and other hardwear to keep you happy. Stud details on shoes and bags were key and there was a particularly Balmain-tastic denim jacket with pyramid style studs along the collar that caught my eye. Other jacket detailing included exposed zips, waterfall fronts with large eyelets, peplums, military styles- there was a jacket to suit all tastes.

If you’re not into the whole rock chick look Evans offered plenty of softer more feminine pieces with floral prints, a sharper modern take on the tea dress, liberty- esque prints, maxi dresses and soft knits.
As well as clothing I also saw some truly delectable vintage inspired underwear that actually made me breathe in sharply and whisper “OMG” to myself but I don’t have any photos at the moment.
More looks from the event to come…………..

Chaka Khan in Reveal Mag
Posted: November 19, 2009 Filed under: Magazines | Tags: Chaka Khan, Evans, Reveal 9 Comments »The Christmas campaign at Evans featuring Chaka Khan kicks off today and I’m looking forward to seeing all the images from the shoot, some of which are in this week’s Reveal magazine. I’m already a sucker for anything polkadot so the reclined shoulder bearing come- buy- my- jumper pose is effortlessly working its magic on me. Resistance is futile.

Real Live Reindeers!
Posted: November 16, 2009 Filed under: General Ramblings | Tags: jingle bells 4 Comments »I was out shopping yesterday afternoon and I saw hoardes of people gathered in the middle of the street along with around 20 security guards. Being nosey I had to go and see what the attraction was so I shuffled through the crowd and there they were- real reindeer!

This was truly an OMG moment for me because I don’t remember ever seeing reindeer before and I was struck by how beautiful they are. Also, as you only really see them portrayed alongside Santa on christmas cards and not throughout the year you kinda forget- or rather I forgot that they are not mythical creatures. I stared at them for several minutes just wanting to stroke their faces but of course I didn’t lest I lose a few fingers. My reaction was much the same as it was when I first saw buffalos in Brooklyn Zoo and I was all- OMG BUFFALO as I had only ever seen them in films. Did you know reindeer even have fur on their antlers? That makes me sound like a complete idiot but really- I didn’t know.

Truly stunning creatures but my awe was shattered as someone shouted out that they should be out in the wild not kept in behind bars. I don’t know where they came from or where they are usually kept but I hope they are well treated and have ample space to roam about and just be.
Why were they there? It appears that they and “Santa” were being used to give sleigh rides to people but I didn’t hang around to see this as it wasn’t scheduled to start for another 45 minutes and I had to move on. I did feel a bit uneasy though that they were going to be put to work pulling people around in circles just so that they can have the full jingle bells experience.
You Will Always Hear Her Coming
Posted: November 14, 2009 Filed under: Accessories | Tags: Armadillo shoes 12 Comments »It’s finally happened. Two months after their catwalk debut someone has dared to wear the ugly ass McQueen armadillo shoes out in public (Lady Gaga’s vid doesn’t count) and that person is Daphne Guinness- well it would be really wouldn’t it as Ms Guinness loves her showstoppers.
Apparently people have been trying to get their hands on a pair of these monstrosities since the show, but I sit firmly in camp fugging ugly. Just look at the size of them- they’re much the same height as her lower leg so how she managed to walk in them is a mystery to me. Armadillos aren’t a good reference point for anything IMHO and my stomach still churns at the thought of the bleeding armadillo cake in Steel Magnolias- Ugh!
Horrid footwear aside, the rest of Daphne’s outfit is stellar.

Posted: November 13, 2009 Filed under: General Ramblings | Tags: Fountain pens 3 Comments »Since the iron fist ruling at my secondary school that you had to use a fountain pen for all work I’ve been pretty much against them despite being a moderate stationery geek. I still have memories of ink stained hands and leaky nibs ruining my pencil cases, though I do have one fond memory of deliberately flashing ink onto the back of the nice white cardigan a supply teacher was wearing, then acting like I had no idea who did it. Until today I’ve never confessed. It was me. She was horrid and deserved every blot. I hope it was permanent.
Over the summer my fountain pen aversion softened and I made an impulse purchase at Paperchase (the row of pens at the counter gets me every time)of a Papermate disposable fountain pen with turquoise coloured ink. Its my new BFF and its made me shed the baggage of my past and want a new fountain pen. I was looking online and I saw this beauty…..
……..from thepenshop.co.uk for the modest sum of £45,000. No that isn’t a typo, it is actually FORTY FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS which is approx $75,000 USD for my American friends. Is this the most expensive pen in the world? Nope, a quick search brings up a few diamond encrusted numbers that go for around $730,000 USD. I do like this pen though and it reminds me of Lara Bohinc’s signature fretwork…
but needless to say, my fountain pen will cost considerably less and won’t be even a fraction as luxe.
